Our school competes in a number of sporting events throughout the school year, a short report of each of these events can be found below.
Our Tag-Rugby team took part in the annual festival at Bridport Rugby Club. Our fantastic team of 10 played 8 matches throughout the morning. There were some tight games but excellent tagging and try scoring meant we won all of our games. This unbeaten streak saw us crowned champions. The team was Rafferty, Faith, Alfie, Charlie H, Kian, William, Jack, Archie, Maisie-Grace and Emily.
Year 3 took part in the dance festival at Freshwater in March. The theme this year was ‘The Earth’ and each school had planned and rehearsed a performance to fit this theme. At the festival, each school was able to perform their dance to an audience. A great afternoon was had by everyone and I’d like to thank Mrs Dickson for coordinating a brilliant performance.
Friendly Football Match
We played a friendly match against Charmouth Primary School at the start of March. The confidence our team had built over their first 2 games showed and they started strongly. Kian worked hard up front to force a mistake in the opposition defence and we took the lead through an own goal. Some great work on the wing from Lucas set up a goal for Kian before a strong forward run from our captain Archie led to a third goal. Another well taken goal from Kian took us into half time with a 4-0 lead. It was not all one way traffic though and Alexander had to be alert in goal. Maisie-Grace and Emily were solid in defence. Alfie, Oliver and Alec had to work hard in midfield as we looked to extend our lead. Kian was able to add a 5th goal and complete in hat-trick in the second half. The game finished 5-2.
Lee and Zak have been in school this term delivering both football sessions and multi-skill sessions on Wednesday afternoons. Year 3 & 4 have been working on their ball skills in PE and Years 2-6 have been able to take part in a fantastic after-school football club.
We were invited to take part in a trio of Orienteering events with 2 other schools, Thorner’s and Salway Ash. Each school hosted an event and our Year 6’s attended. We were treated to good weather and the children certainly enjoyed themselves. The children worked in pairs and were given a map of the school grounds along with a series of points they had to visit in order. Some fast running and excellent map reading resulted in some fantastic times.
In January, our football team began their campaign in this year’s Kenway Cup with a fixture against Bridport Primary School. This was the team’s first game together and they were unlucky to lose 4-0 following some great football. A week later we played Symondsbury School, needing a win to progress in the competition. The team linked together really well and created lots of chances. They were unfortunate not to score 2 or 3 goals, being denied by both the post and some excellent goalkeeping. The match was won 1-0 by Symondsbury.
Our running team have competed in both local and county races this term. Local races were at both Colfox Academy and Beaminster Secondary School, whilst some of our Year 5 & 6 runners travelled to Bournemouth and North Dorset to race against children from all over Dorset.
Primary Race 1 was at The Sir John Colfox Academy in January. 31 runners from St. Catherine’s ran in the 3 races and they all performed superbly with some incredible results to match. We won the team trophies for each race and some of our runners won individual medals for finishing in the top 3 for their race.
Primary Race 2 took place at Beaminster in February, 25 runners from St. Catherine’s ran in total. Another great set of results were recorded. We won the Year 3 team race, finished joint winners in the Year 4/5/6 Girls’ Race and were runners up in the Year 4/5/6 Boys’ Race. We also had 6 runners place in the top 3 across all of the races.
The Primary Relay Race took place at Colfox in March. Our fastest 12 runners teamed up to take part. All age groups raced together in mixed teams of 4, each runner had to complete a lap of the course before tagging their partner. Our A team started well and built a considerable lead. Our Year 3 team were not fazed by running with the older children and held their position towards the front. Our B team also ran well, aiming to be the 1st placed B team. Our A team finished 1st, the B team 6th and the Year 3 team finished 1st.
In January our Year 6 runners, Archie, Imogen, Tegan, Emily and Maisie-Grace, competed in the Dorset Schools Cross-Country Championship at King’s Park Athletic Centre in Bournemouth. They ran against Year 6 & Year 7 pupils from all around Dorset and certainly held their own with some high placed finishes.
In February, our Year 5 and 6 runners competed against runners from all over Dorset and Somerset at Claysmore School. They were in teams of 4 and took part in a relay race which involved them each running a lap of the 1.5 mile course alongside older Year 7 & 8 runners. The girls’ team of Maisie-Grace, Emily, Tegan and Imogen finished 10th out of 28 teams. The boys’ team of Archie, Jack, Charlie and Kian finished 5th out of 18 teams.
